What do you lads do when busy. Last year I took too much work on so result was I didn't get all the work done before Christmas. So now booked solid till Feb. Already the phone calls are starting for More work. Do you price every job? Pick or choose what you want? Take every job on? Do you have a diary and stick to that.
Try to vet them before even measuring. Get a feel for if they're serious and if so, prepared to pay my rates. Pretty much pick and choose
I`ve stopped pricing a lot of work, and already turned away a lot, for next year. Anyone I don`t know, or have not worked for before, I don`t bother with. Were in a weird position this year, because I already know we won`t be able to cope with the workload, but don`t yet know how it`s going to be spread through the year.
When you take other fitters on do you do a job with them To see what they are like or give them a job?
Most fitters that I use, I already know. I rekon I will be in a position this year, where I will have to use whoever I can find. If this is the case, I would like to think I would be on site with them. I have a bit of a problem trusting people I don`t know
Im kind of in the same boat Daz and I hate turning work away because im just to god damn greedy ... ...but what I usually do is either burn the candle at both ends (when possible) or I have a few other subby's that I can sub it out to. It depends on what the job is. I have plenty of labourers I can trust to rip out and even screed so sometimes that works well. When I physically cant accommodate it then I turn the job away (if I cant push the date further back) and have the right ump (...because im greedy) Ive only ever used labourers who I dont know but for the fitting I always use someone who ive 'tried & tested'..
I priced myself out of alot of crappy work in December. Nothing worse than fitting crappy toilets and having to turn down a whole house of engineered wood!! So December was great, nice jobs all finished in time no stress....but it has left me quiet in January. Still got 4 measured tomorrow and Tuesday so it will start to come in.
I've got another lad starting apprenticeship in February and I'm hopeing we will soon manage better with 3 of us instead of bringing in other fitters.
I start flooring (LVT) full time in April.., so if anyone is down my part of the country (Worcestershire) and need a reliable installer, give me a call . At the moment I've still got 4 jobs to start (fitting in around my current job).., but come April., would be nice to be booking jobs at least 2 months in advance...
Don't be frightened to make a profit. If there is a glutt of work out there put your prices up. Like Mario says, he is still getting the jobs.
