I’ve lost a job to someone who is fastening a new wood planked floor directly to an old pine floor. I’d priced for a intermediate layer of plywood glued to the old pine boards then the new floor fastened to that. I wouldn’t do it any other way, what do you do?
Same boat for me. Had a phonecall lastweek to look at a hallway with tacky B&Q solid wood down at present. Customer wants Karndean down and I told them they need to get the solid wood up for me to reboard it then renovate screed. Customer seemed puzzled as to why the solid wood needs uplifting so I explained why and left it with them. Got a text the following day saying they've had a cheaper quote due to the existing solid wood staying and 6mm board going straight over the top then the karndean and could I quote for the same so I said its no bother and good luck. They text me back with a sad face emoji
Good luck to them! The solid oak underneath will still continue to expand and contract, even more so by adding a non breathable layer on top! I wouldn’t have got involved either!!
I don’t fit any timber floors without ply or screed going down first! Yes it adds an extra cost, but when you explain the reasons behind it, the customer normally sees sense... I once replaced an engineered floor that had been stuck with the liquid batten system direct to floorboards, what a mess, pulled the old floorboards straight of the joists! Screw ply at 150mm centres, then if needed, renovation screed, then bond to that! Unless it’s floating of course, you can ring shank the ply down!
