A customer has selected some heavy contract tufted impervious gel backed carpet (usually used for rest homes etc) for a bar area, but wants it fitted on underlay for additional comfort. I had thought of putting this on a double stick with Durafit 650. Has anyone done this before or had issues with underlay under gel?
Never done it & never heard of it being done ? But if you can't change his mind & your guna do it I'd say defo go with a dense crumb rubber f3 the lot & cut it all net I'd try put them on to a different carpet first
I've done Iron Duke on 650 crumb .They needed it for acoustic properties been down 4 & years still all right.Same as Spacey F3 with a good notch B1 between carpet & underlay & maybe double drop until it starts to go then give it a good glide.Should be ok.
Did it with a very expensive impervious cut pile from the states, had very heavy blown PVC backing, laid it on durafit but permanently fixed the underlay to the floor, rather than tacky, worked ok, Problems you could have will be joints, excessive up and down movement due to the underlay could allow the joint to become frayed, Maybe test adhesion between gel and underlay, Last year I had to look at a hotel job that another contractor had done in a hotel conference area, he thought he was getting sponge back and he got gel back, client wanted underlay So he used cloud 9 and it failed, Ball and young said they could do it and so did Fballs, the carpet had been stored for a while and had a little ripple, When they rolled it out they should have stopped, but they didn't. I think they late placed the carpet into the f3 on the cloud underlay, I think they let it go off, the ripple in the carpet made it come away from the surface of the underlay, but cloud nine has a shiny plastic type surface, But they did have trouble,so be careful
Done it before, durafit system 650 double stick. Use blind gripper as it will give a better finish at edges. Maybe seam joints first then stick in,or place heatseam tape in f3 then seam, put in wet and keep gliding.
