Evening all, I am hoping you may be able to offer some guidance. I have been renovating / developing a property and am looking to lay some solid oak 140mm x 14mm prime grade. I would have preferred engineered but this particular flooring came available at a price that was hard to resist. I have a L shaped room, approx. 7m x 7m. If you imagine the vertical part of the 'L' is the new extension with screed over block and beams which was laid back in July at 60mm thickness so should be nice and dry by now. No underfloor heating or other pipework. The other part of the L is the existing property which is 1950's, quarry tiles which I believe also acts as the DPM. A few of the tiles sound hollow but all in tact with no obvious damage. A few bits of this floor has been patched with concrete or similar over the years.This area will have a 12KW wood burner in it. Thats the background - now the question. I want to glue the flooring down but I am reluctant in the existing part of the house. I know I could put a liquid DPM down, SLC and then proceed but I am concerned about the floor lifting the quarry tiles. Stripping these out at this stage of the job is not an option. Has anyone ever stuck part of a floor and then glued the tongue / groove and floated part of the same floor? I am thinking if I use the thinnest underlay at 3mm with a vapour barrier could I make this work? I have dot and dab walls everywhere so can achieve plenty of expansion but obviously against the area that is glued the floating section would be unable to move freely. Please be gentle
Can’t see it working at a floated floor will move a lot more then a glued one. Massive risk imo. Put a liquid dpm over the quarry’s and float the lot on timbermate excel underlay.
It’s a no, any solid has to be bonded down and the tiles will fail you absolutely need a proper sub-floor to install solid oak on, the new screed has to have a surface dpm too you never ever bond solid or engineered wood down without doing so or it definitely will fail. Flooring grade asphalt might be your friend here and you’ll need a click system engineered wood to float it, send the wood back it’s not fit for purpose. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yes solid is defo no go. Wood burners also not good with solid oak. Latex is too weak for solid oak. Absolutely cannot float solid oak as it will constantly shift around as it expands and contracts and will eventually buckle. Really need engineered Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
