Your floor layer advised you wrong, you shouldn't put a screed over the gypsum until it had been grinder to remove laitance and is dry enough....

You had underlay yes? ....and they've stapled the carpet on each step? What type carpet have you had fitted?
My minimum charge is £5m2 for screeding but have put it up to £7m2 for domestic which is mainly what I do.
