hi lads maybe a silly question but looking at getting a small industrial unit for work, do you think i would get more work out of it? you know look more established/ professional. From a flooring contractors point of view?
Been thinking the same myself. Thought could have part set up as a showroom. Would probably help getting accounts and better rates. Also, some like to deal with someone with business premises rather than a home address. Do a google search for "space business centres". If theres any near you, they're 30 day leases and very low rates
Just remember if you're quiet that overhead still needs to be paid and money disappears very quickly as it is when you don't have as much coming in.
Had a decent size unit cost about £1000 a month just ended up full of crap a total money Pitt so got rid ! Did have a showroom in it but no real passing trade plus I wasn't there enough ! Maybe if I had someone there all the time would have got some more work from it but that's more money to Falk out for wages ! If your doing a lot of work & getting regular delivery's you need somewhere but it wasn't for me & I manage fine with out at the mo !
We had a shop but now have a unit so we don't have to have someone in it all the time. You cannot get accounts with decent firms working from home. Yes furlongs, mcd will deliver to anyone but I you want brintons, brockway, unnatural flooring, better stuff then you ned accounts with them. Also when you get things like cormar or victoria from wholesaler s, you will pay more than what I do. To be competitive you need to start on the best rates. i can be very competitive, still make good money and run a business with pver heads but you need to be paying the lowest price to start off with. In my opinion it's way more professional, if you are trying to build a business rather than a one man operation then i think you need some sort of premises. we would never be doing big jobs or dealing with decent firms if we worked from home. We would also have no where for all the samples, carpet, underlay etc etc. spacey is right though, the cost is always there and when you are quiet it's a lot to spend out when you get no return. Most my work is Karndean theses days & I've got an account working from home ! For anything else a friend has accounts with everyone & supply's me at cost so I'm sorted with no big overheads ! Horses for courses
yes but if you have a unit/shop you can get products cheaper than your working from home account! and with commercial jobs the way they are with pricing you get more of a chance.
@spacey if you can make it work without the expense that's good and if your mate lets you have stuff at cost you are on to a winner. Me personally, we couldn't not have a unit, we must have the accounts and we hold stock in roll form carpet,,vinyl for certain customers.
Think I will look into that as I'm in the same boat as you working from home but buying from wholesaler.
