Just had a phone call off a customer I'm half way through a job saying as they are disabled they don't have to pay vat. They want me to sort it out and knock the vat off. Anyone know if this is true?
I think they do only certain things are done at 0 rated vat as in medical equipment and other stuff of that ilk, also not all disabled people are eligible for example a heffer who is registered disabled due to their weight wouldn't be able to get the vat knocked off a fridge or a landscape gardener but could get vat knocked off a crane device to help her out of bed as well as the installion of said device, there is no blanket 0 rated vat for disabled people and unless its a cap and cove bathroom I'd seriously doubt it would apply anyway.
A website to help, http://www.disabledaids.org.uk/main.asp?sitepages=vat_exemption_for_disabled that's where I got my info
Don't see that being applicable then myself, maybe Matt might have more an idea what could be claimed and wha can't, unless it was a cap and cove bathroom I'd of said not applicable and anyway why didn't they bring this up at the quote stage?
Just looked on the gov website http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/vat/sectors/consumers/disabled.htm and id seriously doubt a lvt floor would qualify for 0 rated vat, definitely a capped and coved wet room but not a design floor, it looks like it would have to be an integral bit of building work for it to be vat exempt ala a wheelchair ramp or a wetroom built downstairs etc etc
Im sure you need a copy of there disability certificate to be submitted to accountant and I thought it was reduced vat to 5% not vat free but I may be wrong
I believe that they still have to pay you VAT but can claim it back on anything that is 0 rated but that is up to them not you ?
I'm 99% sure that lvt won't qualify. As with furniture, the product has to be registered by the manufacturer with HMRC as a health benefit to qualify. That's why a lot of furniture companies end up with VAT corrections at their year end when the VAT man says that half of their recliner sales weren't actually VAT deductable and by that time the customer that saved the VAT is long gone. I got caught out on that one in my first year, never again!! Not to label everyone on disability.......... but............ there's a helluva lot of them on the blag!!
P.S. If they had asked you to fit something like Forest FX then they probably would qualify as its recognised more for being a specialist floorcovering more than a domestic.
Rang them, only flooring you can get vat free is anti slip in a shower or bathroom. That told her !!!!
