its wood and he is a chippy ! whats the problem? surely a chippy knows how wood works, how to read its moisture etc? On a serious note, i think Chippys should be called 'chisels' Basically they know how to use a chisel to notch a bit of wood. They tend to know nothing about wood and how it works . There is the odd chippy that knows what he is doing but seriously rare.
I think you have to give him credit in that he's aware of his lack of knowledge. A real idiot would have ploughed on regardlessly
