I was fitting in a kitchen/diner today. The owner's daughter came in to do some washing, produced a wool sweater and asked her mother about the washing instructions and was informed the symbol meant hand wash only. She walked to the washing machine and stared at it for a minute before turning to her mother and saying " where's the hand wash setting on the washing machine?"
Just looked at my own machine and, sure enough, there's a hand wash setting. Ah well, my ex-wife took care of the washing machine settings. Funnily enough she also had a setting that meant I had to do certain things by hand.
