Fitting 6mm ply

I'm putting down 50m2 of this on a domestic job. It's going over existing floorboards which in general aren't too bad. I've used divergent staples and these were going down ok until I came to an area where a row of new boards were raised. I sanded them down as much as I dared then carried on.

The ply was squeaking louder than my hip replacement and so I had to use a load of screws to stop this. I'm wondering if I should screw the rest down but it's going to take longer than I had allowed.

I was thinking of getting a screw gun but all the ones I've seen take screws longer than 20mm. Does anyone know of one that uses them this size?

 

I use nails on floor boards and sometimes staples on chipboard John.
We screwed ply down last week on a job as it was 12mm ply. Took ages though.

Ive stopped using staples because of this. Screw down and feather over the whole thing now. If I was doing alot I would get one of those nail guns for the compressor

 

yes i have just got a nail gun for the compressor brill no squeaking now, have always used divergent staples before and had the same problem on floorboards.

On chipboard though staples work great as I tried both on a job last month.

 

Dont use staples unless its a v small bathroom etc
Just not confident it does the job proper tbh
No way would i ise it in any big areas, compressor & nail gun, or my autofeed screwdriver

Need to ask you about that mate. How much is one of them. Could of done with that last week.
Do screws work out costing alot more then the nails

prob ive found is actually getting the right screws
drywall ones are crap, they wont countersink, no grab
Took me bloody ages to find the proper wood collated ones in the right length too
I keep boxes of various lengths, from 20mm upto 35mm

Thanks for the link Cool, the info on the Makita says screws from 25mm but you say you use from 20mm - will the Makita take 20mm and isn't there a risk if you use 25mm on 6mm ply over floorboards?

 

Just use 9mm if theres any doubts mate
25mm is the shortest length i can find at the moment
