Hi Guys, We're having a new extension built and the builders have got to the flooring stage. They have laid hardboard sheets down over the wooden joists to form a floor. Is this normal instead of floor boards? We're just a bit worried in case we should query this with them. Thanks for any help you can give. All the best Chris
No they should not lay hardboard. Are you sure its hardboard? i would guess it will be chipboard or plywood? If chipboard or plywood then this is o.k, not a great fan of chipboard but building regs approve it.
Hi Thanks for the answer, Bit clueless when it comes to building stuff. It does look more like chipboard come to think of it. ? Is it strong/hardwearing enough to support bedroom wear and tear etc? Would it be normal for the builders to lay it without asking a preference? Cheers again for the help Chris
for us to advise if it is correct we would need to know the joist spacing and thickness of the material used. Do your plans not state what material was to be used? Chipboard (flooring grade) is the most common material used as a subfloor by the major builders. Me personally i would not use it in my own home. Thats my personal opinion tho. End of the day building regs etc are happy with it. :shock: If i had a choice i would use plywood or floorboards.
