so i know we have a few members on here now. But what is the reason why alot of you are not members of the NICF?
Quite simply dont feel that I need to be. Lack of confidence on my part aswell, because I don't fit flooring full time I stupidly feel I wouldn't be good enough for a trade body such as the NICF. Crazy but just the way I feel
not a answer i would expect! I cant see why you lack confidence, your posts suggest your more than confident enough and i cant see any reason why you would think your not good enough.
Actually Ray, i,m inclined to agree with you. I am a bit nervous of a fitting test , if that's what its called. I just think i would make a fool of myself.
Its like this Matt, for the last 12 years I have not worked with another fitter and as such I always had this nagging 'Am I doing this right' at the back of my mind. I have since realised that I was just being stupid as I have sold and fitted 1000's of sq mtrs of flooring over the course of my business without advertising of any kind, relying totally on word of mouth from satisfied customers. In addition forums such as this have helped greatly with tips and advice but also with insights into how others work which has made me see I have been doing ok all along. I am confident with customers and whilst doing the job, its just me being silly I think. Being totallly honest I am scared to do anything which will promote my business at the moment because I am struggling to cope with the workload as it is. Anyway what would you say are the advantages of being in The NICF ?, because you do have me thinking !! cheers Ray
There is no fitting test to be a member, the fitting test only comes into it if you want to become a 'Master' fitter. However they do send you a written test through the post that you can spend your time filling in. Very simple questions that any fitter will be able to answer.
The benifits- + enhanced image by being a member of the NICF + Listing on NICF Website- broadening your work opportunities + Use of NICF Logo - Promotes you to the public as a quality fitter + Buisiness support helpline through Croner Consulting + Technical advice line + Code of Practise for the installation of floorcoverings + Discounts on FITA training Courses + Discounts on work wear and tools + Free subscriptions to stocklists and contract Flooring Journal ( really good mag full of info every month ) + Newsletter + You will also have a voice in the future of your trade.
Yeah, thanks for the info. If you look at the NICF directory there are relatively few members - certainly in my area - there are only two who could be classed as local. I have never really given it much thought, I did think about joining the upholstery equivalent (AMUSF) a few years back but the subscription fee alone put me off. It would be nice to have letters after my name, but I think I'm happy to keep on going as i am at the moment.
Ye know problem, its upto you what you decide is best for yourself. Im just trying to gather some information of why some people are members and why other are not.
i agree with you Ray i have to much work now,and im 54 to day so i feel to be to old to join now, if i was 20 years younger i would go for it. old Steve.
Yep and dont forget that the fee includes a trade magazine delivered to your door every month packed full of new products and some very good info. Must say i learn something from the mag every month along with great deals on new and products. You again get listed on there website and promoted as a fitter in your area. You may have to much work on at the moment, but i would prefer to have to much work coming my way from customers who want a good job and are prepared to pay the right money for a professional service. People who contact the NICF are not looking for cowboys on 'mates' rates that will under cut you but are prepared to pay for a professional. Im not trying to sell the NICF to you chaps here, just trying to find out why some people are NICF and some are not. For me just the magazine is worth being a member!
I think its like this , the genuine good guys - well let me just say their work and their attitude takes care of themselves - no need for trade affiliation. This is only my personal opinion and not intended to offend anyone . How many members of the public are even aware of the NICF ? Which magazine Matt ? cos i get the stocklists every month without asking for it -very welcome mind you !! At the end of the day my customers are the ones who examine my work, its totally up to them whether my reputation is enhanced or otherwise, once you realise this then you are on the right track Regards Ray
