Any new members to the forumafter the 11/06/10 can not enter. So then, the comp- As some know im having building work done. Im having a garage and study/utility built . The total area of the new section (building) is 37 sq'm. The total area including drive way had to have soil removed as it was 1 meter higher than the original building. I have also had the driveway extended into the front garden (7 x 8 meter) that had to have 10-25cm adverage of soil removed. The builders estimated i needed 60 tonne of soil removed and they would be here for 2 days digging the footings and lowering the land down to the correct height. TIP- the builders was wrong! So questions 1- what was the totally amount in tonnes that had to be removed? 2- how many days in total did it take to dig out? Get guessing!
That reminds me of a song..... by Tennesse Ernie Ford... 16 ton and what do you get... another day older and deeper in debt
45 ton and it took over a week because it started raining, then snowing and then the ground froze solid ;-)
so the guesses so far are- 51 ton & 2 days = tedmaced 45 ton & 6 days = woodyoulike 48 ton & 4 days = Lambchop Is that it? 3 guesses only? there are tools to be won here!
Do you know a builder that considers 7 days a week? ;-) Over a week = 6 - 7 days (and I'm keeping it as vague as any builder would do)
The comp is now closed! The answer was 300 ton! Thats basically 45 large skips or 15 grab trucks ( what we used ) That makes 'hobbit' the closest with 81 tonnes. It took them 5 days. As no one guessed 5 days but there was a guess either way we will roll on with another comp next month. 'Hobbit' P.m me your address so we can get you your prize posted out.
a major under estimate! the soil was very wet that did not help. then we had the issue of hitting the sewers and had to dig them up, then they hit the main water line that went to other houses and flooded the garden that sent it to mush and the trenches collapsed. But mainly down to not estimating the amount to be removed properly.
So...... it was more a "hypothetical" question than us trying to work out the maths! (never mind, we'll know for the next competition not to take it toooooo seriously) ;-)
