As above, My attic stairs are a thing of mystery, How they've lasted THIS long is beyond all of us at home.
They are very loose but not all the way out....yet. Later today I'm going to rip away the plaster board underneath the stairway
and see how bad they really are.

My question is how do I tighten them up so they're solid? And would it be a BAD idea to laminate them once repaired?

    Thanks in advance, Tosseef.

take a picture of the rear of the stairs and pos it up so i can see how they are built.

Laminate on stairs is o.k, but you will need to fit nosings that are expensive.

Finally! Where have you been Matt? lol. Unfortunately I can't get pics off mobile to laptop as the USB's are gay. The house was built about 40 odd years ago and has an actual "stair case" in place. It has a frame on both sides with the rungs in slots and those are held in with old skool "wedges". I think If I cut up some wood, and screw into the side of the frame I can support the rungs at least. But I still have the issue of creaky steps!

What do you suggest Matt? Or if your free for 5 mins can you pop over and just take a look, tomorrow about 5?

stringer= the side bit bolted to the wall
riser= the back bit of the stairs that you kick on the way up
tread= the bit you walk on.

The wedges are normal. You may need to pull them back out, PVA glue them and knock them back in place.

For strength (providing the treads are correct thickness) you can screw and glue batterns under the treads and to the stringers.

You can also screw through the tread into the riser from above and from the riser into the tread from under the stairs to make strong. This should also stop squeakes. Try and squeeze some pva glue into all gaps/joints.

O and - "Finally! Where have you been Matt? lol."

I now know what to do...I just haven't got round to it yet! Looking for some Led's so I can put them in the risers to give me an incentive to actually finish the stairs.

Guys what happens if the wedges are old and "brittle" (if wood gets brittle) and they break when I take them out? I'll have a go now carefully, and see what happens. I'll keep you all posted.

Thanks for the info and link bud, Good info there.

I liked the bit where it stated to screw the treads into the riser.
