I know the various floor coverings we fit each have their own different warranties (for what they're worth) but what guarantees do you guys (and gals) give with your fitting? Do you give different ones if it is carpet or wood or laminate or vinyl?

I don't fit carpet (apart from sisal/seagrass etc.) although I do supply it and have fitters to install, but I do fit wood, laminate and lvt. I don't give a specific warranty on the fitting but tell my customers if they do have a problem in the future to contact me and I will sort it out. Should I give some sort of time scale?

The reason I ask is a few years ago I supplied an Axminster (Goodacre I think) and after two years the customer rang to complain the carpet had rucked up (as if heavy furniture had been dragged across it - though she said not). I said I did not see how this could have suddenly happened and told her if I sent out the fitter I would have to charge after all this time. She was not happy. I contacted the NICF to check if this could happen and was told that it could. In any event I sent out a fitter and he re-stretched the carpet - no charge.

Recently I had another lady who had the same problem although she did admit to dragging a sideboard over the carpet.

    What guarantees?

normal 12 months on carpets for rucking etc.

However if a carpet bubbles etc it is normally down to fitting error unless-

The carpet backing is crap and to stiff to stretch without ripping
Wheeled chairs or wheeled furniture running over it
Someone has pulled a side up (bt etc) and lost the stretch.

We only install wooden floors (from wood-engineered to Design Parquet, no laminate) and our works comes with a "4 seasons" guarantee - which in one go explains to the client the wood floor can react during the seasons to changes in humidity.

In normal circumstances the wood floor will not show any movement any longer once it has gone through all the 4 seasons = 1 year. During that time, when the client thinks there's something amiss we come out for free to see what the problem is (most times it can be sorted there and then).

This 4 seasons guarantee is mentioned both in the quotation and the order confirmation, so the client knowns upfront what to expect. Then, 4 weeks after the floor is installed, he/she receives a letter in which we talk about maintenance and mention the 4 seasons guarantee again.
