Our lounge / dining room floorboards have the "usual" 3-4mm expansion / shrinkage gaps between them - but nothing drastic.

Should I put down hardboard before getting a new carpet fitted - how do you decide whether to bother or not?

Place a spirit level over the boards, depending on the severity of the dishing/undulations depends on which thickness of plywood to use(4mm or6mm) I say plywood instead of hardboard because it.hardboard, requires wetting 24 hours prior to fitting to fitting to prevent warping

sometimes the floor boards are cupped and hardboard would ease it a little but being pretty flexible takes on the same shape as the cupped floor boards (ripple effect) in this case I would ply out the room.

If you use pre-treated Hardboard no need to wet it.
I would also advise Ply over Hardboard anyday. ;)
