Hi, I am looking for the "best" underlay for a cormar 100% wool loop carpet for stairs and landing. For bedrooms i normally use wilsons plushwalk 11mm, but I undertand for stairs and landing, ideally 9mm is best and something that is not PU foam, but maybe I am wrong? Ideally by "best" something that does have comfort undefoot but is realtively hard wearing? Thank you,
For a 100% wool loop carpet on stairs and landing, a 9mm underlay is a good choice to avoid issues with fitting and durability. Something like a good-quality crumb rubber underlay, such as Duralay Treadmore, would work well. It’s hard-wearing, provides decent comfort underfoot, and is non-PU foam, which is ideal for high-traffic areas like stairs.
I’ve worked with wool loop carpets before, and for high-traffic areas like stairs and landing, a dense, non-PU foam underlay like felt or rubber is a great choice
For stairs, I prefer using Plushwalk 10mm. Over the years, I’ve found it performs much better because it uses memory foam, which has superior compression recovery for long-term wear. Many other underlays rely on recycled PU foam, which tends to flatten quickly unless it's very high-density and the downside of high density is a much firmer, less comfortable feel underfoot. I’m a carpet fitter based in London, so if you need any help with installation, feel free to reach out!
