We got a 70 year old house. We love the house except every hardwood board makes a squeaky noise when stepped on. If a person is walking upstairs, the noise is clearly audible downstairs. We have kids who sleep upstairs, so we are woken up anytime they wake up to use the restroom or what not and its really annoying.

Things I have tried so far,
    1. using 2 1/2 inch screws to screw the boards to the joist below. Added one screw per board where they meet joists. Only did it in part of a room as of now. Didnt help as I believe the noise is made by panels moving up and down the nails. When I step on them, I can feel that the hardwood boards are moving down a little.
    2. Added baby powder in the gaps. Did not make any improvement

I do not want to remove the existing hardwood as that would be too much work to remove one at a time manually. This is a DIY.

So, I am trying to cover the hardwood boards with LVP and trying to get advice,
    1. Idea is to nail or screw the s**t out of the existing hardwood to the subboard. Should I nail or use screws? If screws, what size?
    2. Nails would be easier as I can use a nail gun. But I am afraid they might again cause noise in the future. If nails, what size and type?
    2. Anything else I can try to reduce the squeaking?

    I appreciate any advice.
