Hi there, I need to prep 45m2 of concrete subfloor for solid block parquet. It is pre 1960s so suspect there is no working DPM. At the moment there are 9 inch tiles down which i suspect contain asbestos, not tested yet, I believe the bitumen adhesive can contain asbestos too. The tiles come up pretty easily and there is only a thin layer of bitumen underneath. thinking of using Wakol MS330 DPM followed by Wakol D3045 Gritted Primer and then Wakol Z715 Levelling Compound. As recomended here: What do we do with reclaimed Parquet Block? - Lecol UK (can't link as new user) The blocks I have are pitch pine and I will remove the bitumen on the back to leave fresh wood. Would you do this or grind off the bitumen and then go for a different liquid DPM and SLC? I have seen some people talking about using ARDEX NA to encapsulate the bitumen but looking at the datasheet it seems to have to low a strength? Thanks for any help, Cheers, Steve-o
Remove everything back to the concrete, mechanically remove all bitumen, degrease, fill any cracks with Ardex P10 SR, Ardex P51 primer 1:7 mix, Ardex K301, DPM 1 C, P82 or P4 primer, K11 or K40 HB and you’ll be good to go. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Forgot to mention if concrete is good enough after removing all the bitumen and grinding start from dpm1c onwards. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Thanks for this information, how would you remove the bitumen, I assume it contains some trace of asbestos, but assume it is difficult to release as it will be very bound up in the tar.
Thanks, I was trying to find any testimonial from someone who had actually used it. Was looking for ages and then found this and thought it was a bit too good to be true. Going to get the bitumen tested then may get it grinded if negative. Otherwise probably use the wakol system.
My only concern with the wakol liquid dpm is that the data sheet seems to say it cannot be used as an alternative to a structural dpm. If I'm reading it right. The lecol website seems to be recommending it though...
Good point. Would need to take readings. If there’s rising damp silane won’t work. Still would t get me to grind bitumen lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I emailed a few people for quote to grind it out and none even asked if I had tested it for asbestos.
They don’t care mate. They probably had 5 fags on the way to the job. Most bitumen doesn’t have asbestos but I’ve had loads tested and a few have come back with it in. It’s low amounts but not a job for me Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Should be a good earner. On a commercial job a few years ago and a cupboard had some asbestos vinyl tiles in. They paid the asbestos removal company to remove them… £600 plus vat!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Called the lecol support and they think that my original plan starting with the ms330 wakol dmp should be fine for this situation. So I think I'll go with that. Now just need to clean these blocks...
Average price for grinding up bitumen with asphalt is around £65m2 if memory serves, I can’t be arsed doing it myself so usually get the customer to hire a specialist firm and leave them to it then do the rest of the prep myself. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I rang ardex technical for a floor with bitumen adhesive! They told me to use NA. Funnily enough it is a property I’ve just bought 12 months later still no issues
I used the wakol system in the end and it seems to have worked really well. Would recommend if you want to lay glue down parquet over old bitumen residue. I got tests back on the bitumen and it was shown as containing asbestos so decided against grinding it out. The MS330 dpm stuck to it very well and I'm not concerned about it coming up!
