Speaking To Dan before about other trades being idiots. Making our day harder.

can’t be just me but most never do a Dpm sheet correctly under patio / bi fold doors. So after a while LVT will always lift.

Today I had a joiner saying I had to put the laminate floor down early so he can fit the kitchen 1st as that’s how he always does it lol

What do you guys see that makes you mad.

Builders who tell me that it won't need screeding before the LVT because they PVA'd and put some wickes screed down o_O

I also had 1 last year who told me to fit the lvt in the orangery before any windows had been put in because it was summer and warm enough so won't make a difference

Yep it’s getting ridiculous. Builders literally lying about the work they have done to get a floor down. We are constantly having issues with bi fold doors. One builder told me he doesnt put insulation across the bifolds because the carpet grippers won’t fix properly?
Unbelievable amounts of ufh systems not fully working when we come to install the floors.
Walls taken out and no attempt to fix the breached dpm/dpc.
Also lots of builders seem to think you can knock a load of walls down in a house a make it open plan with out even putting a level over a floor. We’ve had subfloors so out of level and damp it would be cheaper if the builders had priced to break out the subfloor and install a new screed with proper dpm and that’s what they should be doing really.

These trades can’t seem to get a floor flat. Got a brand new landing with a high spot by the top step that causes a 20mm problem. Just poor workmanship

I’m not really surprised. More and more customers push on prices and look things up on the internet themselves. We have to be firm in why we do things a certain way and charge what we do to do a job correctly.
I’m sure it’s as bad for other trades as it is for us so is it any wonder why corners are cut?

Sure it’s easy to blame bad workmanship and god knows there is plenty out there but I’m guessing there is also an element of trying to get work done to unrealistic budgets because they don’t know how to (or can’t bring themselves to) say no to a customer.

Happens far to regular with these builders and other trades who think they know how to do a floorlayers job.
One of my regulars customers has been funding her son's new house refit and her ex (his dad) is a builder, a good one at that but because he's been in the job 40yrs he can't be told anything other than 'his way'...

I measured up just after new yr and they have done a breakout of the old outside toilet to join it to the cupboard that was already inside the house to make a bigger utility room. Soon as I seen it I noticed the cracks in the screed and it was hollow everywhere so I rang him and told him he'd made the same mistake he has several times when I turn up to his jobs and the idiot still hasn't listened to me. He's chucked a cheap screed over quarrys without any dpm or the right screed and all I got was it'll be alright once the amtico is down and stop over thinking everything lol.
I rang his ex (my customer) and told her the situation and she said she'll make sure he rips it so I can do it properly. Couple days later he's ringing me up trying to have a go accusing me of slating his workmanship all the time. I quickly made him aware he aint ringing me up trying to talk to me like a pile of s**t and reminded him of the 3 occasions where his work has been at fault and just to accept he has no idea whats he's doing when it comes to fine prep. Left it at that and was told lastweek that he had his 'chippy' fit the leftover amtico and fitted all the utilities to which his ex (my customer) wasn't aware. I popped in yesterday because the lad is moving in on Tuesday and I'm fitting the carpets Monday for him and its a right mess, crunching already so now his lad is panicking and my customer is fuming because its a waste of amtico - not the cheap stuff either, its signature.

....so I'm expecting another phonecall today with more abuse to which I'll be straight in my van and ill see him face to face. Wouldn't usually bother me but i recently heard that he told an old couple in the village to be wary of me because I charge extortionate rates for a simple job that they could get done cheaper AND BETTER by one of his lads :D

That’s one thing that riles me. If you don’t know how to do something say that and get in an expert.
Too many people think they lose face by saying it’s not their expertise when the opposite is true.

One of the most valuable things to know is what you don't know. The most valuable thing to know is where to find out.

Then the customer isn't happy when you tell them you're going to have to charge them, to rip it all out, plus it adds time, you haven't allowed for

These idiots get by and make a living doing it and they never admit to any wrong doing. There’s nothing they like more than another trade to blame their shot work on. Spot it, flat it and avoid it at all costs. Because as soon as you flag them they are in the poo

Worst I’ve seen was the hand rail fell off yeh stairs as I was fitting the carpet
Turned out the builder had used no more nails to stick it on but had gone to the effort of cutting the heads off the screws and sticking them in the holes. Apparently the home owner was rushing him to finish so they could get carpets fitted

Trades are trades, alot of bad, some average and a little good. Had a roofer f*ck up a replacement baywindow roof on my house. How a roofer can mess this up was beyond me. Anyways by end of day 1 it seemed obvious to me they'd messed up so I then had to research how baywindows roofs are built properly. Then I get 2 other roofers to check work done, they both say he's gone wrong so boom back to my roofer. He denys he's done wrong, threatens to sue me, verbally abusive and goes.. next a letter from his solicitor by which time I've had a independent surveyor's report done on baywindow roof works done, which condemns nearly all aspects of the job and because the current works no way to successful finish unless said roofer starts again. So I reply to his solicitor saying I was happy to go to court to solve this and then counter-sue him :) .. alas that's when it went quiet and I never heard from said solicitor or roofer again.

Guess lesson was even the simple can be f*cked up and always get a recommend through someone you know is switched on.

A lot of trades out there getting by this way. Going around doing a shit job and bullying their way through life. Defo need harsher punishments for these types. Every trade should have something that regulates the standards. It then needs to be massively advertised so people are aware of it. Not like
Check a trade where as long as you pay your monthly subscription you can be promoted.

Was on site today. Fair size site, and the same boarders were there, that did the walls on the last few jobs.
The walls were shocking. As were cap and coving so it really show up badly.
Tapers and jointers were no better.
Could still see the scrim tape in the joints. More filler on the floor than the walls.
