Hi I’m sure this has been asked loads of times but now confused by all the advice. We’re knocking out an internal wall to leave a 24m sq room half ceramic tiles on concrete, and half timber floorboards. We’re want to put ceramic tiles over the whole lot (60x30 brick pattern). What would you suggest is the best way to prep the floor so that it’s flat? I’ve The top of the current tiles are about 8mm higher than the floor boards. So I’m guessing we’ll want to rip them up and scrape off the adhesive first.
Take out the ceramics and access from there. It will be part screed part ply for timber section but depending on height differences once the ceramics are up. I wouldnt put ceramic on top of ceramic < not saying you are.
Thanks very much! ok, so we think we need to : Take the old tiles up Remove as much adhesive as we can Screw down ply or hardie backer all over the timber Screed over the concrete up to the hardie backer as near as level as possible Tile over all of it Just nervous that because we're converting two rooms in to one, half screed, half timber...is the grout/tiles across the boundary then prone to movement/cracking? Ceramic tile prep can be a pain and expensive to do properly, you want to remove the old tiles and ALL of the adhesive back to the concrete, ply the wood area with 15mm ply (or 6mm tile backer board) prime and overscreed the whole floor with a fibre reinforced screed such as mapei renovation (this must be 10mm deep over the ply) then to help with cracking go with Schluter Ditra Matting to decouple the tile from the sub-floor use quality flexible adhesive and grout good luck and god help your wallet.
