Hi everyone, I posted a while ago asking about what should be expected of me regarding fitting speed; I hope you don't mind but I'm now needing some clarification on my wage. I don't know if I should be paid more or if it's okay. Basically, I'm pretty much fully trained, but there are some areas that I don't do yet. The setup is: I get dropped off on a job and am expected to get most of it done on my own. Generally, the guy I work for will get a line out, and if there's a lot of feathering to do, he will do that as well. So I do everything expect getting the line out and feathering up. Otherwise, I ply out and fit. Oh and I also don't screed yet - he does that and I mix up. I just want to know how much roughly I should be on. We start early and I get about £60 for an 8 hour day, £50 if it's a few hours less and £40 if it's only half a day. Fair enough I don't have my own van etc, and he does have to spend a bit of time getting the job going at the start, but should I be on more. I'm quite a slow fitter to be honest, and he often has to come back and put in about half hour fitting off the last bit and sealing up, and on a bad day he might have to spend 45 mins at the end helping me finish. I was on £60 a day when I was labouring for a builder, but now I've learnt a lot in this trade (and completed the Amtico course) and feel like I'm doing a lot more than just anyone could come in and do, so I'm just wondering: should I be being paid more. Any input would be much appreciated!
Very difficult to say really, without seeing and knowing you, your age, and also where you are in the country. What I do know is, driving helps a lot. I`ve had guy`s work for me who need picking up and dropping off, and unless your really close, its can be a bit of a pain. I have three sons who all work with me, and Elliss is coming up 18, and is becoming a fairly competent fitter. I can`t leave him to complete a job start to finish, but its not far off. Sounds similar to yourself. He is paye, on £75 a day clear money. It might be a 12 hour day or more, or just a few hours, its a flat rate whatever. Have you asked if you can have a go at latexing ? If you don`t get to try, you can never improve. Also, ask if you can set out, and then just get him to check your line ?
Good advice neilydun. Try to get a bit more freedom on the things such latexing and setting out lines etc. Everybody starts from somewhere
