I say 'odd' cos it looks like clay tiles in the lounge, laid on a couple of inches of sand, underneath which is planet earth itself.

The sand could at one time have been mortar or something similar, but over the years the floor has become slightly damp under the carpet, and portions have sank in places, creating a visibly uneven surface.

My first thought was to lift the tiles, bang down some visquine or similar, then stick 50mm self-leveller on top, but was advised it would sweat. I want the lounge carpeted afterward, so there's not going to be too much opportunity for moisture to evaporate.

Any suggestions out there? Have you come across this before?

    Thanks in advance.
    Ben

Truthfully sounds like it needs replacing with a new concrete subfloor allow about 4-5 weeks then run rh% test dpm and floor installers screed there's lots of them not too far from me

Thanks both, you've defo put me on the right track.

A pal got in touch about a job he had done and gave me the spec for building regs, in case anyone else needs it:

150mm compacted clean stone chippings (i'm guessing to stop the stone dust getting wet and drawing water upwards)
    50 mm sand binding
    1200 gauge visqueen
    125mm kingspan
    1200 gauge visqueen
    150 mm concrete (1:2:4 mix or C20 P mix)

I'm thinking that's a bit overkill for a lounge in a terrace house, so was just gonna do stone chipping, sand, visqueen and 10 cm concrete.
