Just started doing this myself and yes it's a bit more time consuming and a bit more fiddly but the end result is really good! Does anyone have any pics of winders they've done grippered so i can check i'm not doing it the hard way lol
I'm not being funny Steve, I've been on here looking for answers, and I've openly discussed things on here before that I got taught on the courses but id say, most people don't agree with that and i think it was commented on last time. i did pay a decent amount or money to go onto a floorskills course to learn these things.
I know a few fitters do it. I have reservations about it myself. You've got a cut end of gripper poking up through a tightly stretched bit of carpet. Personally I think the gripper end might wear through the carpet after a little while. Sure it looks good at first, but there's no protection for the carpet as it bends over the cut end of the gripper. I 'd like to see what it looks like after a year or two.
i always leave my gripper a inch and half short then this allows for the doubled over carpet to sit flush dont really see the benfit of grippering side risers
this method has been around for many years. Obviously if you dont do it right then yes you might end up with gripper poking out. If done correct then it will actually increase the life of the carpet.
The reason why you dont see the benefit is because your doing it very wrong. Bit like if you was doing a stretch fit in a square room, if you installed the grippers the wrong way around then you would not see any benefit.
I'm sure if done correctly (?) it won't poke through. But I can't for the life of me see how it could extend the life of the carpet?
Installed correct and the correct stretch pattern will extend carpet life. The key being the stretch pattern. Without gripper on the sides you cant do the correct stretch pattern. If a carpet is not stretched to the correct tension then it will collect grit which causes the pile to wear. It wears because grit becomes trapped at base of pile and acts like sand paper being rubbed away each time you walk on carpet or your heel rubs down the front of the riser. If teh carpet has tenstion on it grit will not get trapped in the same way. Bit like putting some grit on a drum and beating the drum, it bounces off. if you put grit on your bed it dont bounce off, just like eating toast in bed ! them crumbs are there no matter how hard you try and get rid of them. That make sence?
Sorry Matt,I'm sure you know what you're on about but we're talking stairs here, where the footfall is always 3-5 inches either side of the centre of the tread. Grit/dirt will always collect there, no matter how the carpet is stretched, gravity sees to that. Dirt does not migrate sideways, only to the lowest point. The tension of the carpet cannot possibly have any bearing on where it will land and settle. This will always be underneath where it was shed because of gravity. Dirt will always settle at the lowest point, like pouring dust on a trampoline, it will settle where people bounce. On stairs this will always be where there is the most tread.
No, sorry not really, following that logic you would gripper the risers on straight stairs as well? or I could well be getting completely the wrong end of the stick on this post? I just don't see how grippe ring the RISERS will extend wear.
as above you may be correct, its the way i always understood it and how brintons many years ago tested and showed me with a open area on a back of the riser to show different levels of wear when they accelerated wear. I could be totally wrong here, going on what i was told and shown. The width of the step makes a difference as i understand as a winder is wider than a normal stair case, hence if a wide stair case of over 1m wide its recommended to install gripper on the sides also. Anyway, the main thing for me is the actual appearance which is 100% better than curling.
I started grippering the winders last year and I personally think it looks much better and easier to fit. Don't do it for cheap carpet or cheap jobs unless I've got nothing else on but alway do it over landings and half landings now.
