I've got the festool with the guide rail leaves a really clean cut and takes 20 seconds to trim a door, also if its egg box and its been trimmed down already you don't snag at all, they are pricey but you can't beat them, if you've got a hallway with 5 doors to cut that's when you see the benefits of the festool.

i have looked at makitas as well as festool but to be honest i feel the makita will do me
is it easy to use chaps? i presume you need to make a few passes if you are trimming say 10mm off a door and do you have to use the tool in such a way for the grain getting chipped

I use the makita plunge saw and it cuts the doors perfect. I still need to get a rail for it tho

when im cutting anything i score with a knife first, that way you not chipping pas where you need to cut
ANd yeh, a couple runs with a plane is what i do
My makita whips off 4mm at a time, but i prefer to take 2mm - 3mm passes at a time.

ive got the mafell ksp40 which comes with a rail for about £450 notes but very good also have a bosch planer which takes off half a mil at each setting. i also score door but go in from either end as you can chip the door in one complete pass.another one is get a circular saw score door and set up a spirit level with clamps for guide as a cheaper option

i use a circ saw on doors normally sometimes the planer depending on how much has to come off.i always use my mafell on plinths as plinths are long in some cases and doing a whole run with a planer plus its chipboard.have you seen the worx handycut theres also another one thats green and comes in purple but cant think of what its called there also good i have the worx one also good for wood flooring and ply

I used a Gripper rods branded door cutter for years, when that died I got the Janser Door boss. This will cut a soft/hard wood door in 20-30 seconds. The door boss retails at around £290, but at £15 a door it soon pays for itself! Also quicker to cut a victorian terraced house door than try to remove 100+ years worth of paint off the hinges to get to the screws :)
