Hello, I'm currently in the process of sanding back years of varnish off old mahogany strip floors. The timber is coming up quite fresh with a real red hue to it as i sand through the darkened varnished surface. I am researching how to finish the floors and am struggling whether to go the Wax/oil route or lacquer/polyurethane option - I like the darker look that the floor had evolved into over the years so I don't want to lock in the newly sanded lighter red look that I now have and wouldn't mind if the finish i used assisted the darkening/ageing process. The first room I have to do is the kitchen which I am currently stripping and is approx 30sqm in area. Can people please advise me on the products available and what would be the best for mahogany? I would suggest a lacquer for that type of wood. Maybe go bona intense primer to get a darker colour followed by bona traffic hd finish in matt/satin/gloss finish Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Thanks for that Merit, I do hear an awful lot of good things about Bona products. What about a wax finish like Osmo wood wax extra thin which is meant for tropical woods like mahogany?
I’ve not used hardwax oil on anything other than oak so not sure but if Osmo make it especially for those types of woods I’m sure it will be fine. There will be more maintenance with a oiled finish. You have to keep oiling it especially in high traffic areas. If you think you will oil the floor regularly it will always look good. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I agree with merit, lacquer does look better on that particular wood, although in the end it's your choice, but i think hardwax oil might make it look a bit dull
