We have won some fairly large jobs lately, and part of the job involves the m/c building a large deck area. They are building them out of timber, with 18mm ply as the finish. Sometimes there fairly good, sometimes a bit rough. We have been overlaying with 5.5mm Sp101 and feathering the joints, which gives an good finish. The m/c is now looking into cost savings, as the deck area`s are about 4-500 sq. m each, and there are a lot to do. They have mentioned using a flooring grade chipboard, as the finish, which is being sold to them, as not requiring overlaying, just feather to the joints. I have asked for the spec, but nothing from them yet. Has anyone heard of this ? as I always thought chipboard was not stable enough to lay over directly, and I would assume slight movement in the deck, would crack the feather over the joints.
Don't sound right to me.. You could just lay on the 18mm ply either use feather or a screed that can go onto wood as a feather... Chip is chip, it's either standard or waxed, neither can be adhered to directly, always overlay.. Got a name for this board??
I think what they are saying is that the board is flooring grade as in used for flooring rather than wall or ceiling/roof
Thats exactly what I said to the m/c, but he said he asked whether the chip could be directly laid on, and they said yes. No name for it yet, but I have asked for full information, and a spec sheet.
Were fitting Polysafe Arena. Honestly don`t know what type of board it is, they just said chipboard. I`m hoping it just gets left, as what were doing now, works fine.
Surely it matters more that the flooring and adhesive manufacturers ok that subfloor rather than the othe way round? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Totally agree. I certanly don`t want anything to fail, so will push to keep the plywood in place, and ask Poly too. I also have to be seen to be doing my homework, as if there is a product on the market which works, and could potentially save some serious money on a roll out, then I need to look at it.
Surely the only cost saving would be to potentially use a cheaper 4mm ply instead or cheap fibre over the 18mm ply? unless they use ply as the finish and do it to a good standard then you could potentially just feather the joints if thats the route they want to take
